Classic British Film

Hello, I am Ryo Shinohara. In this blog, I am going to introduce Classical British Film. The film title is “The King’s Speech”. This movie was made in 2010 and won the work award at the 83rd Academy Awards, so it is a masterpiece. I would like to talk the clothes and public objects of the people at that time that appear in this movie.

Before that, I will briefly introduce the outline of this movie. This story is set in England in the 1920s and 1930s and about overcoming the complex held by King George VI of England by interacting with various people and becoming a king loved by all the people of England. He had a disease called stuttering. This illness is a language disorder in which you cannot speak words smoothly and cannot communicate well with people in the first word when you say something. This obstacle was fatal to him because he is a king, he has to give a speech in front of all the people. However, he meets a speech therapist named Lionel, begins to face his illness, gradually overcomes it, understands his position and role, and tries to fulfill it.

From now, I am going to focus on British fashion in the 1930s. This is a British fashion in 1930s. The feature is that both women and men wear hats and women wear coat and men wear suit. Especially in the 1930s, European countries were hit economically by the Great Depression, but it feels like clothes that do not make you feel it.

Next is an elevator. First of all, the biggest difference from now is that you can see the inside from the outside. Then, to use this elevator, first go inside and press the button on the floor you want to go to and when the elevator door is doubled and closed, it works. In this movie, there is a scene where George VI uses this elevator, and he is confused because he does not know how to use it. When I see this elevator for the first time, I think it’s difficult to use like him.

The last one is microphone. This is a very important item that appears many times in this movie. The difference from now is that a parts that you speak is big. This microphone is also used in a serious speech by George VI in the last scene of the movie to the public, so if you have a chance to see this movie, please pay attention to it.
